Philippine team competing at WORLDSTAR’s World Championships of Performing Arts 2006 gets heads up from Judges
Announcement of winners will be this Saturday August 12 at the Hollywood Palladium

The Philippine team who are in Los Angeles competing for WORLDSTAR’s World Championships of Performing Arts (see was given a welcome dinner party at L.A. Rose Café (Fountain Ave. and So. New Hampshire in Hollywood) by host, Edith Montelibano, GMA Pinoy TV Area Representative for Southern California and Nevada, on Friday, August 4, a day before registration of among 40 countries involved in the world competition.

The 8-day event is being held at the Burbank Hilton Hotel and Beverly Garland Hotel as competition venue, with Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Hollywood Palladium (corner Sunset Blvd. and Argyle Ave. in Hollywood).

Team Philippines comprise of 21 competitors and 4 executives attended the Opening Ceremony held on Sunday, August 6, at the Hollywood Palladium, hosted by Emmy award-winner Bob Eubanks. Finals will be held also at the Hollywood Palladium and will be hosted by Fil-Am Michael Copon (most noted in his performance in WB’s “One Tree Hill,” and as VH1’s winner in “But Can They Sing”).

The WCOPA Philippine executives who flew from the Philippines are: Ida R. Henares, WCOPA Philippines National Director; Michael Chiong, WCOPA Philippines Event Organizer; Jets Battung, WCOPA Philippines Officer; Rizza Navales, WCOPA Philippines.

Philippine team competing in the Junior categories are Kim Flores and the Cercado Sisters: Almira, Irene, Mylene and Celina Cercado. In the Senior category are Jonalyn Viray (last year’s GMA 7’s Pinoy Pop Superstar winner), Brenan Espartinez (PPS runner-up winner), Rachel Alejandro, Jon Joven, Dex de Rosa, Jennifer Bautista, Jeremie Antiporda, Juaquin Tungol, Rommel Luna, Bim Mangubat, Carmela Cuneta, Glenn Cadampog, Angelo Ortiz, and the trio “Siblings” (Juan, Paulo and Beverly Marquez).

Executive producer Kitchie Benedicto and Creative Marketing Manager of KB Entertainment Unlimited, Inc., who are managing company of “Siblings” and the Cercados Sisters, together with Bert de Leon (director of KB Entertainment’s “John & Shirley” currently being aired on ABS-CBN network) are also in town to support the team.

Last year's WCOPA Grand Champion, Jed Madela (who received a standing ovation when he sang "The Impossible Dream" during the Opening Ceremony last Sunday) also flew from Manila for this year's WCOPA presentation, accompanied by his manager Annie Mercado.

In last Tuesday’s preliminary, one of the judges who were impressed by the trios (Siblings) and the quartet (Cercados Sisters), were asked to be a special guest in the new pilot “The Next Shinning Stars Showcase” which is currently being taped at the Henry Fonda Theatre. It will be aired on BET network next year.

(Newsflash: All Philippine team passed for Prelim except one who did not make it. Tomorrow, Friday, is the announcement for Semi-Finalists who will then compete for Gold, Silver, and Bronze in each categories at the Final Ceremony on Saturday, August 12, at the Hollywood Palladium.)
