AMY ADAMS gives tribute to motherhood in her latest film NIGHTBITCH
By Oliver Carnay
The AFIFEST screening of NIGHTBITCH was followed by a conversation with producer and actor Amy Adams moderated by writer and film critic, Scott Mantz. The film is being released on December 6, 2024.
Motherhood is a (night) bitch in Marielle Heller’s (DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL, CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME) frank, perceptive and fur-ociously funny adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s bestselling novel. Oscar® nominee Amy Adams stars as Mother, a successful artist and curator with her career on pause while she stays home to raise her two-year-old son in the suburbs. Ostensibly living the dream, with a supportive – but mostly absent – husband (Scoot McNairy) and plenty of time to bond with her child, she is, in reality, slowly being worn ragged by the isolated monotony of diaper changes, tantrums and sleepless nights. Mother’s new domesticity takes a surreal turn when she begins experiencing strange bodily changes, a penchant for red meat and an overwhelming feeling that she might be turning into a dog by night. Transcending your average werewolf yarn, Heller crafts a tale of a woman tapping into something primal and feral which allows her to unleash — and return to — her inner power. At once a profoundly original and smart surrealist comedy about motherhood and identity, and a feminist tribute to the unsung power of women everywhere, NIGHTBITCH will have you howling with laughter, crying with joy – and ready to thank your mom for her service.
