LOS ANGELES—Filipino American television and movie actor Sean Michael Afable accepted the Camie Awards trophy for his participation in Akeelah and the Bee in a star-studded event last May 12 at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre, located in the Academy Television of Arts and Sciences in North Hollywood.

“I’m thankful to have been honored, for being a part of a great movie that embodies what Camie stands for—character and morality in entertainment,” said the 18-year-old actor during his speech. “I was privileged to meet other Camie awardees like larger-than-life Tiny Lister (One Night with the King) and ultra-talented actress Dakota Fanning (Charlotte’s Web). Sharing Camie awards with these people whom I admire on and off screen is truly meaningful for me.”

Presented to entertaining and uplifting theatrical motion pictures and made-for-TV films that provide positive role models for building character, overcoming adversity and strengthening families, the Camie award wining theatrical films of 2007 are: Akeelah and the Bee (Lion’s Gate), Charlotte’s Web (Walden Media, Paramount Pictures), One Night with the King (Gener8Xion), Eight Below (Walt Disney Pictures), and The Nativity Story (New Line Cinema).

Among the attending honorees were Dakota Fanning, Shirley Jones (Hidden Places), John Newton (The Christmas Card), Olivia Hussey (Mother Theresa), Jeff Hephner (The Water is Wide), JR Villareal and Sean Michael Afable (Akeelah and the Bee), and Tiny Lister (One Night with the King). Celebrity presenters include former Camie winning actors and actresses Jon Voight, Josh Flitter, Gabby Soleil, Erin Cottrell and Holliston Coleman. Marty Ingels presented the award to his wife Shirley Jones, John Schneider, Las Vegas-based singer Sandy Kastel, and R&B producer and songwriter Kashif, and actress Julietta Goglia.
Camie Awards Inc. was founded by concerned parents and others who recognized a need to help strengthen families and provide parents with a source where they could find wholesome entertainment. As they began working on the project, people from different faiths, cultures and backgrounds became involved.
