30 Candidates Vie for Mr. Asia USA title at The 3rd Annual Emerald Night Ball on April 7, 2007
30 Contestants vie for Mr. Asia USA 2007 at KU Alumni of USA’s “3rd Annual Emerald Night Ball 2007”
The Kasetsart University Alumni Association of USA (KU Alumni of USA), a non-profit organization, in cooperation with AIDS Healthcare Foundation, will host its third annual gala dinner, “The 3rd Annual Emerald Night Ball 2007,” on Saturday, April 7, 2007, 6 PM at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills (9876 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, CA 90210).
Also known as the 3rd Annual Teppabute Nonsi Competition, KU Prince Charming, the event is part of the annual fundraising which helps humanitarian projects. Teppabute means “a prince charming” in Thai, and Nonsi is a symbol tree of Kasetsart University. This year, the pageant supports Wat Phra Baht Nam Phu, a free hospice for HIV patients in Thailand.
Participants vying for the title Mr. Asia USA must be single male of Asian or Pacific Islander descent, and between the ages of 18 and 35. The competition will consist of casual wear, swimsuit, and formal wear categories. Ten finalists will be selected and seven titles will be awarded. The winner of Mr. Asia-USA will receive $1,500 cash prize, crown, a certificate, a year of acting classes at John Michael Studio, and will be featured in an Asian models calendar. The first and second runner-ups will receive $700 and $600, respectively.
In addition to the Mr. Asia-USA title and the runners up, winners will also be selected for the special categories namely, Super Model, Super Star, Mr. Photogenic, and Mr. Popularity, for which each will receive $500. It is noted that each contestant can win up to two titles, with cash prizes up to $2,000.
As of writing, more than 80 applicants from different states have forwarded their application, which consists of a bio, a headshot, and a full body swimwear photo. Application will end on February 26, where only top 30 contestants will be announced to compete for the final pageant. The selected top 30 candidates will be presented to the international media on March 4, 2007, via media conference at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Rigid rehearsals will start on March 18, 2007. The first public appearance of the final candidates will be at the upcoming Thai New Year Parade on April 1st at 9:00 a.m.
The 3rd Annual Emerald Night Ball will start promptly at 6:00 p.m., and will also feature a fashion show, as well as several vocalists from both the opera world and the Broadway stage. Brian Kong is a professional commercial model with over 20 commercials in 8 Asian countries under his resume. Also an actor, he just booked a guest starring role in an upcoming Cinemax film mini-seriesproject entitled "Sin City Diaries," where he plays the Japanese "Yoshi." He is currently shooting in Las Vegas for "Michiko Gets a Make-Over" (episode 7) opposite actress and international supermodel Amber Smith.
James Ryan Curry – 20-years old, who lives in Lakewood, CA. James' father is with Dutch-Irish-Yugoslavian and Hawaiian descent, while his mom is a a Filipina-Chinese-Spanish-Portuguese. "I grew up closer to my Filipino side. We are a very close-knit family and always take care of each other."
James has never experience joining a pageant. "This is a very new experience for myself." Asked why he is joining the pageant, he replied, "I want to make my family proud, specially my mother."
He is very athletic – he likes surfing, snowboarding, playing basketball and water polo.
Unlike mostly Fil-Ams who grew up in the United States, James loves eating "bagoong" with Kare-Kare, and even "Dinuguan." He also loves "Sinigang."
Asked what's the best advice his parents has given him, he replied,"Always keep my head up. Never look down upon myself. Always push hard for greatness. Be positive and religious." James religiously goes to their Christian church every Sundays and attends bible studies either Thursdays or Sundays. His motto in life: "I want people to see that anything is possible. I think possitively and staying strong by having faith in God."
"When I’ve been told about that this is a non-profit organization and that it will help the HIV/AIDS victims, I really want to support and help this advocate. I’ve been through a lot and have felt pain in my life. I was in an accident and I feel for people who has pain in their lives. I was in a traumatic accident. I was in the hospital for a month in a coma for a week and in life support for half a week. I was thrown out from my jeep wrangler. This was in December of 2003. I had to take a leave and recuperate, missing the best year of high school. I'm fine and better now and ready to take any challenges in life," he mused.
James goal is to help people by being a succellful Physical Therapist.
Steven Arnold is a Euro-Asian (half-Thai, half-Italian) who is bringing his pop/rock singing skills and acting mettle in Hollywood. A former member of a famous boyband in Thailand, Steven has been a professional model in Thailand since age 14 and is currently attending an acting workshop and auditions in Hollywood. Steven Arnold has already recorded three songs from his upcoming Hollywood solo debut album.
John Andreas is a 24-year old Filipino who lives in the San Fernando Valley. He was born in the Philippines, grew up between Parañaque, Manila and hometown Pampanga until he moved to the United States in 1990. He graduated a bachelors degree in Communications and is taking up Nursing. Although, half of his life grew up in the Philippines, he can't speak the tagalog language but can fully understand it. He learned about the pageant through a friend who convinced him to join.
John was a professional model who has done several print works for Powerade, Disney, Mercedes, Direct TV, Pepsi, Paramount Studios ads and others. His biggest work as a print model was a California state wide bilboard about Family Planning. He had also done theatre, being one of the members of Young Actors Studio, having included in the production of Grease and Music Man. He is putting on hold his modeling and acting workshops since he started taking the Nursing course six months ago.
As an Asian-American actor trying his luck in the entertainment industry, his views are still hopeful, "In my opinion, Asian-American actors are very limited with regards to roles, either they are typecasted and certainly I want to break is why is that they always have to be a co-star and have not a leading role. That's something I hope to see and expand. Even though I love the business. It's difficult to find not fame but just success. It's killing me!"
(John Andreas - Filipino) ------------------------------------------------------------- Don Chao – born in Brazil, moved to the States when he is 5. His father lived in Brazil so Don had the chance of juggling his life between Brazil and Baltimore, New York. In Brazil, he had the chance to be an Eco-tour guide.
"I decided to move in L.A. about five few months ago. I have a degree in college in University of Maryland. When I was 15, acting is what I wanted to do. I’m 25 now and here in L.A. pursuing my acting career. I’m into health fitness and have a nutrition business," he said during this short interview during the Mr. Asia USA press conference held March 4 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
"I’ve booked two music videos. I have commercial representation through AKA Talents, but I don’t have an acting representation yet," he continued.
Don is excited about an an article in a men's fitness magazine coming up, "I am going to be the April edition of Men’s Health magazine. I have a huge article how I lost weight – I used to be fat – and how I got this trainer’s body. I thought, if I want to do acting I need to be in fit. I’m not into any acting class right now, but I’ve met actress Maria Matiko and she wants me to be in her acting class."
