Los Angeles, CA – (June 17, 2010) The Festival of New American Musicals will present a World Premiere Concert Staged Reading of “Lost Lady With A Violin,” featuring an Original Story, Book and Lyrics written by Laurie Whitaker (Former Musical Theatre Actress), with Music written by Laurie Whitaker and Jeff Lass (Songwriter for the film, “Dick Tracy;” Madonna’s “Breathless” album). The Concert Staged Reading will be presented on the Main Stage at the El Portal Theatre; 5269 Lankershim Boulevard; North Hollywood, CA 91601 on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 8:00 p.m., under the direction of Jeffrey Polk (Director of 1st U.S. Tour of “Smokey Joe’s Café;” Broadway: “Five Guys Named Moe”), and under the Musical Direction of Conductor Ron Colvard (National Tours: “Hairspray,” “Legally Blonde,” “A Chorus Line,” “Jersey Boys,” “Avenue Q,” “Wicked,” “Movin’ Out,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”) featuring live music and Broadway talent.

Set in the present day and traveling back to 1944, “Lost Lady With A Violin” tells the epic story of Ellie, a beautiful white concert violinist from Philadelphia, who falls in love with a black Army doctor. She gives up everything to marry him and moves to South Carolina. It’s a story of love, faith and the value of promise. The musical score features ballads, gospel songs and tunes set in a 1940’s swing style.

Admission is $10 per person, with check or cash at the door. A reception will follow the performance. For reservations, please call (310) 896-6759. Shepperd (Old Joe) (Broadway: “Little Shop of Horrors”); Harrison White (Announcer/Uncle Lonnie) (Broadway: “The Lion King,” “Sarafina!,” upcoming “Unchain My Heart”); Candice Nicole (Young Ellie) (Broadway: “Les Misérables,” “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”); Jay Donnell (William) (National Tour: “Miss Saigon”); Justin Michael Wilcox (Chris Miller) (National Tours: “A Chorus Line,” “Oliver!,” “A Christmas Carol”); and Susan Grace (Grandma Rose) (National Tour: “Kiss of the Spider Woman”).

Featured roles in the cast will be portrayed by: Donald Webber, Jr. (Adam Walker); Eve Sigall (Old Ellie); Theresa Ford (Mary/Louise); Siri Lorece (Philomena); Jayme Lake (Katie); Christian C. Campbell (Mr. Randolph); Malynda Hale (Ginni); Joe Hart (Jake/Mr. Burgess); Noel Orput (Tom/Johnny); Terrance Thomas (Young Joe); Blesst Bowden (Suzy) and Ashley Marie Arnold (Jemma).

The Festival of New American Musicals was founded in 2006 by Marcia Seligson, Producing Artistic Director (1996 – 2006) of Reprise! Broadway’s Best and Bob Klein, founding board member of Reprise! and specialist in marketing the arts. Supporters have included Los Angeles County Supervisors and the County Arts Commission and The Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angeles. The Festival is presented by The Bank of New York Mellon. Sponsors include the ASCAP Foundation, KUSC-FM, the Flourish Foundation, the Rosenthal Family Foundation and Greenberg & Glusker, attorneys.
