“Mr. & Mrs. A” themselves were surprised to see Martin Nievera showed up unannounced at the last leg of their U.S. concert tour (Pittsburg-Las Vegas-New York-San Diego, and lastly Los Angeles). The timeless music icons and Philippines’ well-loved couple, dubbed as the “Songbird” and the “Pambansang Songwriter ng Pilipinas” were in awe as the Concert King himself entered the stage in the middle of the show, sending a teary-eyed Regine Velasquez-Alcasid while her husband Ogie Alcasid hugs Martin Nievera, another music icon and friend, known as the Philippine's Concert King. Later, Martin revealed the three will have a Valentine offering in Manila next year. Martin, then, obliged with a duet song with Regine.

The sold-out concert held at the historic Los Angeles Theatre in downtown L.A. was packed with a cheering crowd and mostly enthusiastically responding to the duo’s funny ad libs. The charismatic singer/songwriter/comedian had always something new to deliver for his fans -- the “In & Out” joke was new to me, and the constant reminder to buy his new CD (“only 34 are left!) was spontaneously creative! Also, very well-applauded, was when Regine sang “Yesterday” while Ogie translated the lyrics in “tagalog” .. another hit was when Ogie sang an original Korean song he wrote himself (really funny!) .. nostalgic was the Tele-Serye Medley (written songs by Ogie Alcasid), but among the many highlights of the show was when everyone sang a ‘happy birthday’ song to Nate (Ogie’s son with Regine) after singing a song with his sister Leila (Ogie’s daughter from Michelle Van Eimiren, Ms. Australia 1994 and Ogie’s former spouse) together with the power couple.

Regine, in a hearfelt short monologue, revealed that one of the most challenging times in her life was when she lost her voice due to an illness during her Silver concert that drove her into depression. She was scared, had her worst nightmares, and lost confidence in herself. But this has passed, she sequed, and felt she has regained the confidence she has lost, and felt her voice is now better and stronger than how she had ever sang in the past. She mentioned she’s more satisfied hitting those high notes now than she ever did. True to this, her recent very well-received 2-night sold-out R3.0 concerts (30 years anniversary) was very successful, proving once more that her pipes are better than ever and that she’s still on top of her career.

The almost 3 hour concert also featured L.A.’s ‘rising stars’ Jona Peralta, Kiersten Tyra, Bryce Gomez, Valerie Bonoan, Alex Collado, Lorenzo, and the ‘Catalyst’ dancers. Congratulations to Vic Entertainment and Starmedia Entertainment, and their sponsors for giving another memorable show to Los Angelenos!
