By Oliver Carnay

FilmOut San Diego’s 23rd Annual LGBTQ Film Festival will take place from September 7–10, 2023. Dozens of films will be screened during the four-day festival at The San Diego Natural History Museum (THE NAT) and The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) both located in San Diego’s historic Balboa Park. This year, award-winning films from Sundance, SXSW and Berlin Film Festivals, along with independent features and a variety of short films are lined up.

The Opening Night Film, Tom Gustafson’s GLITTER & DOOM, and Party will take place on Thursday, September 7, 2023 @ 7:00pm at THE NAT (1788 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101: 7:00pm to 11:30pm).  GLITTER & DOOM is a fascinating musical about a musician and a carefree kid as they fall in love at first sight.

The Closing Night Film, Jason Karman’s GOLDEN DELICIOUS, will end the festival on Sunday, September 10, 2023 @ 7:15pm at MOPA (1649 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101: 7:15 pm to 10:30pm) with a Closing Night Dessert Reception after the film. GOLDEN DELICIOUS tells the story of an Asian-Canadian teen, caught between his father’s expectations and his girlfriend’s dreams, discovering newly awakened feelings for the boy next door.

The four-day festival will also have special screenings — Men’s Centerpiece: Jay Arnold’s SHOULDER DANCE; Women’s Centerpiece: Sacha Polak’s SILVER HAZE; Festival Spotlight: Andy Vallentine’s THE MATTTACHINE FAMILY; Internaitonal Spotlight: Florent Gouëlou’s THREE NIGHTS A WEEK.  Several filmmakers and talent plan to attend the festival and participate in audience Q&A’s after their respective screenings.
