Big winner of the night was “Song of the Fireflies” receiving the Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards.  The film is the true story of the world-renowned choir from the Philippines that performs traditional and contemporary choral music in the 80’s. In her acceptance speech, Morissette thanked the production team, her co-actors, the MIFF, her acting coach, as well as the Loboc Children’s Choir, and closed her speech in her native language “bisaya” — “daghang salamat!” (thank you).

The Best Supporting Actor Award, which went to newcomer NOEL COMIA, JR. couldn’t make it to the awards night.  His award was accepted by “Song of the Fireflies” Campaign PR Manager Harry Hartman and director of the film, King Palisoc. Palisoc cited the challenges and difficulty of casting Comia, Jr. and all the kids cast in the film.  They started filming in 2018 before pandemic but luckily they were able to shoot all his scenes in 2023 because they all grew up, having had a problem with the continuity of the film.

Tia Carrere announced the Best Supporting Actress, which went to Rachel Alejandro.  Alejandro lastly dedicated her award, emotionally, to her dad, music icon Hajji Alejandro who is currently suffering from colon cancer stage four, “Hajji Alejandro, this is for you!!”

Receiving the Best Actor Award, Seth Fedelin delivered his speech in tagalog — “Ang lalabas po sa bibig ko ay galing sa puso ko at yun ang mahalaga …” He mentioned fellow actors who are also in the audience .. “maraming magagaling na artista po nandito na iniidolo ko .. andyan si Kuya Arjo (Atayde), (ang nanay ko, ang nag-iisang) Janice de Belen, at syempre si Tita Ibyang– Sylvia Sanchez na hindi lamang sa Pilipinas umabot ang talento, kundi sa buong mundo at dapat makilala maging sa buong mundo.” Fedelin also thanked the First Lady, Regal Entertainment – for taking care of him and his loveteam Francine Diaz, and ABS-CBN — “ang bahay namin.”

Special Awards were given to “Faith Healers” and “Song of the Fireflies.” FAITH HEALERS is a documentary that spotlights early Filipino healthcare professionals in America while touching on the history of Filipino migration and the Philippines. SONG OF THE FIREFLIES is the true story of the Loboc Children’s Choir in Bohol, Philippines as it promotes the music, arts and culture of the Filipinos.

The film “HELLO, LOVE, AGAIN” received the WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE HIT TRAILBLAZER AWARD being the first Filipino film to gross over 1 Billion Pesos at the box office and the first Filipino movie to break into the U.S. box office top 10. The award was received by Mark Labella, Annette Gozon-Valdez (GMA Films), and Kriz Gazmen (ABS-CBN Films Head). “I’d like to thank MIFF, the Metro Manila Film Festival, and Cine Gang.  This is the first ever movie collaboration between GMA Network and ABS-CBN.  And this just shows that when Filipinos unite, we can achieve anything.” Kriz Gazmen followed with “We were very happy with this landmark co-production .. When we collaborate everything is possible.  On behalf of ABS-CBN, Kathryn and Alden, Direk Cathy and the rest of the cast, staff and crew of HLA, thank you MIFF for this award. We are very grateful to each and all the Filipinos worldwide who have seen and supported the film.”  Mark Labella reiterated and reminded that HLA not only cracked the top 10 U.S. box-office hits, but beat per average movie.

The ceremony opened with the Philippine National Anthem, and was immediately followed by a solo  performance from SOFRONIO VASQUEZ.  He also later performed a duet with DEBORAH COX, singing “Magkasuyo Buong Gabi,” and for the finale, with RACHEL ALEJANDRO and MORISSETTE for “The Greatest Show.”
